Cleo Sol sings “Know that you are loved, even if you don’t love yourself”.
The entire song consists of that sentence and that sentence only. She sings it 5 times, slowly, and over again.
Music has this way of helping a message land, like a plane in flight, coming home to its original runway. Maybe it’s the melody mixed with the instruments or beat or a certain pitch or bpm that taps into a part of our physiology that just, makes it make sense. Pair that with strong lyrics that you can connect to, it’s like making art out of a stop sign.
How often have you been told to love yourself? How many times have you heard ‘you are so loved’? Sometimes we hear those words (or offer them) in a time of crisis to be reminded (or to remind) of the power of love. Because although the feeling is temporarily lost, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. But sometimes, when you are so low, it feels like a bumper sticker slogan or a corny quote you’d find on the front of a helpline pamphlet. Sometimes it just feels like wallpaper instead of steady ground. And perhaps, just maybe, I’m speaking from my experience only.
When I first heard this song by Cleo Sol, I first listened, to the song as a whole. I get quite lost in her voice, so I don’t really pay attention to much else, and then I replayed it and replayed it. Listening again to the music behind the voice and then again to the lyrics only. I have a thing for studying lyrics - any and all genres if I like the song enough - and then memorising them.
Know that you are loved, even if you don’t love yourself.
Know that you are loved, even if you don’t love yourself.
Know that you are loved, even if you don’t love yourself.
Know that you are loved, even if you don’t love yourself.
Know that you are loved, even if you don’t love yourself.
